Art Basel avec Sarah Nicole Prickett

December 13, 2010

Before you read, turn up your speakers to “Girl and the Sea,” by Aussie electro duo The Presets. This song is several summers old, and I love it.

“Last year I went to Miami for the first time ever, as part of a fashion press trip, and stayed for Art Basel. I didn’t want to love it, but I did. It’s a place that feels forever bright and unburdened by taste or irony. And it’s beautiful in its own tacky way: all the pastel facades, the palm trees, the mountainous pineapple cocktails. This year I went just for Basel, with my world-best friend Adrian. He’s approximately the colour of white chocolate and was terrified he’d get a tan; he wore Doc Martens on the beach. We had fun anyway. This storyboard is brought to you by my experiences, and it’s about the breeze, the sunbleached glory, and the “art deco-dence” of America’s uncoolest major city.”

1. Navy stripes, timeless and seaworthy. Shirt, $75, by A.P.C @ The Webster Miami
(they don’t have their eshop up yet…you can also buy at Net-a-Porter) 2. One of Mary Katrantzou’s lampshade skirts: could her art-decorative aesthetic and longing tropical views be any more Miami? Nuh-uh. Skirt, $don’t even want to know, by Mary Katrantzou. Her line is sold at The Room @ The Bay but the skirt is not yet in stores 3. Galliano’s swan-print satin foulard as head scarf, to go with your rented Mustang convertible, natch. Scarf, $200, by John Galliano @ Luisa Viaroma 4. A costume cocktail ring, all crystal and deco, like the ones you can find in the Sunday flea markets along otherwise-tacky Lincoln Road. Ring, $325 @ eBay 5. Australian (via Canada) swimwear designer Tosca Delfino’s darling dolphin-print bikini, $110 @ Tosca Delfino 6. No matter how cold you are, wherever you are, this’ll put in you in a sunshine state of mind. Fleur d’Oranger perfume (’cause orange blossoms are the official flower of Florida), $132 for 50 ml, by Le Labo @ Gee Beauty 7. A painting by the incredible, deeply romantic Hernan Bas. He’s the best artist in Miami, I’m pretty sure. Wish I saw his show at the Brooklyn Museum last year. “The Swan Prince,” by Hernan Bas @ Lehmann Maupin 8. For a little linen-chaise reading. The new Lula Mag (guest-edited by Kate & Laura Mulleavy), $25 @ the Alchemist’s second Lincoln Road shop (way up atop a parking garage–so rad) 9.  I can’t be trusted with designer sunglasses; I’d lose my own eyes if they weren’t attached. But youuu should buy these Dries babies, made in collab with Linda Farrow, for your next beach weekend. They’re the exact colour of fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. Sunglasses, $430 @ Linda Farrow.

Sugar and Spice

November 10, 2010

I’m at that point where it’s been long enough since Canadian Thanksgiving, and close enough to American Thanksgiving and Christmas, to start craving the tastes and scents and sounds of the holidays. I’m a sucker for anything pumpkin – pumpkins to me signify the changing of leaves and of wardrobes to knits and wools, the gathering of family, the start of fireplace season, my Dad’s Sinatra collection playing on the stereo (my Brother could sing “I’ve got you under my skin” word for word by the time he was 8), and of scents of cinnamon filling my home. Pumpkin pie has been my favourite treat ever since I was a little girl – I was a picky kid and my Grandma made me my own special custard pots as I hated the crust – but a recent trip to Loving Cup, a cute little rice pudding shop in San Francisco, has me itching to explore new, warm and fuzzy evoking, sweet pumpkin treats.

1.Pumpkin Enzyme Peel, $44, by Peter Thomas Roth @ Sephora 2. Delicious and comforting Pumpkin Rice Pudding Recipe from Not Without Salt 3. Pumpkin Candles, $5 and up @ Crate & Barrel 4. Pumpkin Coloured Wool Robe Coat, $190 @ Zara 5. A Lazy Sunday Sweater that’s cozy yet chic, $345, by Markus Lupfer @ Net-a-Porter 6. Spicy Citrus Roll-on Cologne with heavy notes of Cinnamon, $40 @ Diptyque 7. Wool Ankle Pant, $119, by IRO @ The Outnet 8. Halima Suede Hiking Bootie, $450 @ Tory Burch.

Crisp autumn air, crunching leaves, fireside lounging, burning cedar, chilled out music, soft layers, maple-laced anything…my idea of heaven. Cozy is my absolute favourite word – and state of being – and there is no better time or place than fall in Canada to cozy up in flannels, plaids and wooly camp socks, head out for a country hike to work up an appetite, and collapse by the fire with a good book, a big cup of tea and some homemade maple cream cookies.

1. Sweater coat, $695, by Crumpet @ Net-a-Porter 2. Tee, $30 @ Roots 3. Leggings, $262, by Under Ligne by Doo Ri @ Shopbop 4. Boots, $230 @ Steve Madden 5. Gloves, $98 @ J.Crew 6. Backpack, $356, by Yuketen @ Madewell 7. A gorgeous handmade axe acts as a piece of art, $180 @ Best Made Company 8. Cedar Candle, $35, by Tartine @ Madewell 9. Woolrich Plaid Credit Card Holder (a pressie for the boy), $95 @ Jack Spade 10. Khaki-Vert Polish, $25 @ Chanel 11. Camp Socks, $17 @ J.Crew 12. Tasty Homemade Maple Cookie Recipe @ Sweet Peas Kitchen.

Home is where the Wine is

October 27, 2010

So happy to have one of my fav girlies contributing to the site this week! Karen Cleveland is the marketing and communications guru for FASHION, Weddingbells and Canadian Family magazines, and today she’s our go-to gal for the scoop  on the perfect winery weekend getaway!

“My love-affair with fall is always cemented when I visit Niagara this time of year – it’s the consummate weekend escape. Maybe it is because in addition to incredible wines, I too hail from its terroir, and there’s something to be said for playing tourist on home-soil. Only Ella or Frank can do justice to the golden autumn drive. Cozy knits trump for puttering around Niagara on The Lake – perfect for enjoying something seriously sweet from the Epicurean, across the street from the Shaw’s Royal George theatre. Can a wine evoke a perfect fall day? Peller Estates Signature Series Cabernet Sauvignon sure does for me. But stroll over to their estate and sample it on their gorgeous grounds. Cat nap at the Harbour House before venturing out to see what local prodigy Tony DeLuca made for dinner.”

Harbour House Hotel, $299 a night and up 10. Peller Estates Signature Series Cabernet Sauvignon, $38 @ Peller 11. Simply the Best: Food and Wine from Ontario’s Finest Inns, $19 @ Chapters/Indigo 12.
